Soup-er Sunday: Slow Cooker French Onion Soup (and French bread)

After last week’s fail with Soup-er Sunday (I completely forgot to start the soup.), I was more than ready for this Sunday. French onion soup is always one of our favorites when we eat at restaurants. With all the cheese and bread, what’s not to love?

Plus, I tried a French bread recipe in the bread machine this week. I am continually amazed at how easy baking bread is with it, and I am having a great time learning new recipes to use. And this French bread recipe? I might have spent ten minutes of easy hands-on time. The rest of the time was in the bread machine and in the oven. It doesn’t get much easier to have warm, fresh bread.

Fresh thyme and beer in the soup

I found the soup recipe at How Sweet It Is and the bread recipe at Taste of Home.

Changes to the recipes

No major changes needed for either recipe. I used Gouda cheese instead of Guyere on the soup, but that’s it!

The results

We loved it! With the delicious fresh French bed, we couldn’t stop saying how incredible it was.

Changes for next time

I wouldn’t change a thing about either recipe. The soup is simple to make (with the exception of cutting four onions through teary eyes) and is very flavorful. I still can’t believe I made French bread today, either. So easy!
